Health Care Reform Implementation

The passage of health care reform in March of 2010 signs important step forward in the fight to secure health care for the most vulnerable populations.  Provisions in the health care reform law-- including expansion of Medicaid, increased funding for prevention, the creation of state-based health insurance exchanges, as well as the enactment of numerous regulatory checks on the insurance industry-- will undoubtedly improve access to care for people living with HIV and AIDS and other chronic medical conditions.

In the coming years, TAEP's health care reform implementation advocacy will involve three targeted areas:
(1) ensuring that the promise of health care reform is fulfilled through active participation in the the law's implementation; (2) using provisions in the health care reform law to secure a bridge to 2014-- when many of the most important reforms for people living with HIV and AIDS go into effect; and (3) looking beyond health care reform to address the helath care and essential support service needs of low-income people living with HIV and other chronic illnesses that are likely left unmet even after health care reform is fully implemented.
